Knotwood – CLWS & Chemistry Integration for Vertical & Horizontal Lines

Client Profile

Knotwood is a leading manufacturer of architectural aluminium systems, specialising in durable, timber-look aluminium solutions for facades, fencing, and decking. With a commitment to quality and sustainability, Knotwood services clients nationally and internationally. https://www.knotwood.com.au

Project Overview

Knotwood partnered with Ryonex in October 2023 to upgrade its surface treatment process with a Closed Loop Water System (CLWS) and advanced Chemistry supply. The aim was to reduce environmental impact, improve coating consistency, and optimise operating costs.
Over the course of 2023–2025, the solution was expanded to service both vertical and horizontal lines, establishing a long-term integrated partnership.

The Challenge

Prior to engaging Ryonex, Knotwood was operating a system with high water usage, expensive RO unit rentals, and less efficient chemical dosing. Wastewater discharge posed a potential environmental and compliance risk. Additionally, inconsistency in coating weights and the need for constant staff oversight of wastewater systems presented operational inefficiencies. The client required a solution that could improve sustainability, reduce operating costs, and streamline their pre-treatment process—without compromising on coating performance.

Our Solution

Ryonex implemented a full CLWS skid and Acid Neutralisation System to transition Knotwood’s pre-treatment process to 100% closed loop, eliminating wastewater discharge to sewer. In tandem, we supplied a low-foam acid etch (Alucleen SS) and a Titanium-based Non-Chrome Conversion coating, which provides low conductivity and extended resin cycle life—improving overall system efficiency.

In January 2024, Knotwood was also upgraded to Henkel’s ECO FLEX chemical dosing system on Stages 1 and 5. This state-of-the-art technology provides more accurate dosing by testing the cascade-bound solution rather than the bath, leading to more consistent coating
weights and reduced chemical consumption.

By January 2025, after a full year of success with the vertical line, Knotwood extended the CLWS integration to the horizontal line. Ryonex continues to manage Knotwood’s CLWS, Chemistry, and Gema servicing onsite, creating a fully integrated and future-ready solution.

Implementation Highlights

  • Project commenced: October 2023
  • Vertical line upgrades: December 2023 – January 2024
  • Horizontal line integration: January 2025
  • ECO FLEX dosing pumps installed
  • Cross-functional collaboration with Henkel for dosing solutions
  • Onsite support and training provided across all key upgrades

The Results

  • Estimated water savings of 36kL per day.
  • Elimination of wastewater discharge and Trade Waste Agreements with Councils or Water Boards
  • Removal of $5,000/month RO unit rental costs
  • Improved consistency in coating weights
  • Reduced chemical usage and maintenance effort
  • Enhanced sustainability and compliance

Knotwood has expressed strong satisfaction with the results, particularly in the consistent
coating quality and operational savings. Their push to extend the CLWS to the horizontal line reflects their confidence in the long-term benefits of Ryonex’s solution.
