Project Overview

Freedom Retractable Screens partnered with Ryonex to improve the environmental performance of its powder coating operations. Key objectives included eliminating hexavalent chrome from the pre-treatment process and transitioning to a non-chrome system, reducing the reliance on hazardous chemicals. The upgrade also introduced a CLWS (closed-loop water system) designed to significantly reduce overall water consumption while preventing any wastewater discharge to sewer, supporting a more efficient and sustainable process.

The new non-chrome pretreatment and closed-loop water system have improved safety, simplified day-to-day operations, and eliminated hazardous waste, all while maintaining our high-quality standards. The system is compact, easy to manage, and Ryonex were incredibly supportive during implementation, with great ongoing after-service.

The Challenge

The existing surface treatment process was impacted by several key challenges. Wastewater discharge regularly failed to meet council specifications, creating compliance issues and the potential for regulatory penalties. The use of hazardous chemicals, including hexavalent chrome and caustic soda for pH neutralisation, introduced significant safety risks associated with chemical handling.

Operationally, the system required a high level of manual intervention, including maintenance of pH probes and the management, removal, and disposal of sludge. This contributed to increased labour demands, process inefficiencies, and ongoing exposure to both safety and environmental risks.

Our Solution

Ryonex undertook a series of consultations with Freedom Retractable Screens to assess operational requirements and sustainability objectives. Based on this, a non-chrome pre-treatment system was introduced to replace the existing process, delivering equivalent corrosion protection without the use of hazardous substances.

A CLWS (closed loop water system) was also installed to reduce on-site chemical handling and minimise manual labour requirements. The system recirculates water within the process, significantly lowering overall water use, eliminating wastewater discharge to sewer, and removing the need for a trade waste agreement with the local council. Additional benefits include reduced operational costs, simplified compliance, and improved environmental sustainability.

Implementation Highlights

  • Project delivered: November 2024
  • Location: Gold Coast, Queensland
  • Non-chrome pre-treatment system implemented
  • Closed-loop water system (CLWS) installed
  • Hexavalent chrome fully eliminated from process
  • Wastewater discharge to sewer removed
  • Manual handling and sludge management reduced

The Results

  • Reduced manual labour and maintenance by removing pH probe cleaning, sludge handling, and effluent management.
  • Improved corrosion protection and coating adhesion using clean DI water. The new non-chrome pre-treatment system combined with pure deionised water improved coating performance and durability.
  • Eliminated wastewater discharge through a closed-loop water reuse system. Minimised water consumption and removed discharge to sewer.
  • Removed hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals from site, improving workplace safety.
  • Eliminated regulatory intervention and EPA site visits by achieving full compliance.
  • With zero effluent discharge, no longer a requirement of trade waste permits or council approvals.
  • Improved environmental sustainability through reduced water and chemical usage.
